Your posts not appearing?

Every few days, we get a note from someone (or they post a bug report) indicating that their posts "aren't showing up" on LeftyBlogs.com.

Invariably, they're wrong - and everything is working just fine.

So, I'd like to describe (again) how this works and hopefully all those questions can go away.

LeftyBlogs.com is about local content from local blogs. Every 20 minutes, when we scan a blog, it categorizes your posts into "local" content and "non-local" content.

The local content headlines make it on the home page. The local content headlines also make it onto your state's home page. All the other headlines are on the "non-local" tab of each state. (As well as the "combined" tab - which, as you can guess, is a combined feeed of local and non-local.)

Almost every time we hear, "our posts aren't showing up," they are in the combined and non-local areas - just not on the local tab or the home page.

Admittedly, the local/non-local logic isn't perfect. Believe it or not, we don't manually sort all 2000 posts that appear here every day. There's a keyword-matching system that scans for some 7000 keywords in each post. If you mention a city, a county, or a major elected official from your state in your post, it'll get flagged as "local".

It is not, of course, perfect. That would require artificial intelligence. A number of bloggers use wacky nicknames for their local electeds (esp. Republicans). It's also not our fault if you can't spell Schwarzenegger or Kulongoski.

There's one more reason why your posts may not be appearing: If something has gone wrong with your RSS feed. If it's disappeared or been corrupted, we can't read it. If it's super-slow (longer than 15 seconds) in loading, then you'll wind up on the 'slowpokes' list and get indexed only about three times a day. (This happens a lot with WordPress feeds, which appear to be generated dynamically with PHP.)

We're continuing to improve the logic - and hope to introduce some audience-based tagging/flagging features sometime soon. (Before those systems can work, our traffic needs to grow somewhat.)

Stay tuned.

Although FCDC post on Schadenfreude watch, Virginia 5th CD is one of the most clicked on stories, it does not show on the Virginia home page. None of FCDC does, and this is a very local blog.

Also, as of today GOTV blog is not showing up. Now I have been posting some about non-local issues, but GOTV is a very local blog.

Hi, Kari, I was just told about your site and naturally signed my blog up.

About the scanning of the RSS syndication for local content...had you considered using Technorati's "tags" system? This way, if we each posted a "yourstatenamehere" tag in our posts, it would winnow down the number of feeds you guys would have to read thru. I post probably five or six posts a day, and maybe 20% are local politics, and another 60% are politics at a national level that I try to tie into local politics as I can.

Posted by actor212 on December 2, 2005 07:22 AM

actor212--- rest assured, we don't read all the posts manually. it's an automated system. I think it needs to be an automated filtering system - otherwise, we'd have to rely on blog authors to tag their posts.... which they won't/don't/can't all do.

Posted by Kari Chisholm on December 2, 2005 04:35 PM

I'm one of those who are not seeing anything. Will be taking the "lefty blogs" button off the my blog unless I can figure that it's really a part of things here.

Do enjoy reading everyone's else's posts though.

I've signed up and have been accepted (Maryland, newsrack blog). Now I'm curious how to get the "# clicks" thing to work for my posts. I know people are visiting via leftyblogs, so "no visits" isn't the explanation.

From what I can tell this one did not make it. It is all Wisconsin. Was my error not using "Wisconsin' in the intro?

My blog: www.topofmyhead.info is showing as not updating since 12-14. I have updated numerous times since then. My feed address is: www.topofmyhead.info/atom.xml I took a look at it tonight and it looks okay to me.

Can you check on this and get back to me?

Hello... I have a blog in the Massachusetts section called "Health Care For All". The blogroll says that my blog has not been updated since last Thursday while in fact it has been updated many times... can you please check on this? This is a very important time for us and leftyblogs generates traffic for us. Thank you thank you thank you!

Posted by John on March 1, 2006 08:45 AM

Hello....thanks for getting our new blog up so quickly. One question, though -- there are a few local stories that, according to your keyword based logic -- should be showing up on the local stories list. Specifically, they are http://www.greenmountaindaily.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=34 -- Update on Emergency Contraception, http://www.greenmountaindaily.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=31 -- National Issue Comes Home, and http://www.greenmountaindaily.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=30 -- Democrats get a rare do-over... will they use it?. I'm pretty sure there are others, but these are the most recent. Is there something I can do in my posts to make sure this goes to the local list, or is it possible your local-keyword-list for Vermont is not up to date? Thanks.

Posted by odum on March 1, 2006 02:33 PM

So if we are listed (ie we have seen an email or hit from your "acepted" link on a site meter) on your site and we don't see us on the site...are we really listed anywhere?

Thanks

If you're in, you'll be listed your state's blogroll. (Well, about 20 minutes after I've accepted your blog.)

Posted by Kari Chisholm on March 4, 2006 10:29 AM

Sorry to be a bother, but since I was added to the blog roll on Thursday, none of my posts have shown up on either the local or the non-local content, even though some very much should be considered local. I was wondering if there's usually a time delay with a new blog like that? The RSS feed appears to be in working order?

Posted by VirginiaBelle on March 6, 2006 02:28 PM

This post does not show up as local content. It has "Jensen' in the headline and the first line. With his trial almost done, all of the Jensen posts have been showing up as local content. I can't figure out what went wrong here.

I'm having some trouble with posts not showing up today? 'Tried republishing. Some posts came up on Local that really should have been "national" and others that are truly local aren't showing up? What to do?

Posted by desertbeacon on March 13, 2006 10:40 AM

This whole debugging thing is going to be lots more effective if you tell me what your blog is - and, what state it's in.

We're up over 1300 blogs now, so tracking you down can be a challenge.

Hey Kari. I am having trouble getting my posts up on the blog. My feed is working fine, I just looked at it. Yesterday my stuff was showing up on LeftyBlogs but today it is not. I am in Massachusetts and my blog is www.massrevolutionnow.com

Thanks a lot!

Posted by Andy on March 22, 2006 11:51 AM

OK, I am officially no longer answering any question about "posts not appearing" when the question arrives just 20 minutes after the post in question.

Wait at least a couple of hours before you complain. Sometimes, your RSS feed is momentarily unavailable -- in which case, we skip it and come back later.

Andy, your "Russ on the Daily Show" item appeared on LeftyBlogs almost exactly an hour after you posted it.

Posted by Kari Chisholm on March 22, 2006 11:12 PM

Kari I am very, very sorry. I felt stupid because the posts showed up shortly after posed the question. Some didn't show up for several hours which I later realized was probably just a slow RSS feed. Please accept my humble apologies and thank you for all the work you do in keeping this site up and running!

One of my bloggers edited the title of his post, and now only the former title "Murray Campaign Proves to be a Fundraising Powerhouse" is appearing on the blogroll and leftyblogs. And when people click on the link it takes them to an error screen. The new title is "Tim is Gaining $peed and Money-mentum!" Please put this into the Blogroll. . . THANKS!

Posted by Sandi on March 27, 2006 09:34 PM

Sandi -- If they really did just edit the title, the correct title will appear in LeftyBlogs (after the next update) and the link will always work.

What you're describing, though, tends to happen when someone deletes a post - and then posts a new post. Both the old post and the new post end up on LeftyBlogs. (Same thing with personal RSS readers, too.)

That's not good - and I've added to the bug fix list, but the better solution is always just to really edit the title -- not delete, and re-post.

Posted by Kari Chisholm on March 27, 2006 11:06 PM

Just a word that my blog name will show up on the list, but the title does not so noone can click to link to it. Also, on the state page, the post title is not bold like the others are. This occured all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago. I haven't done anything different, so am just wondering what the situation is. Thanks for a great spot; I've grown to check it out often.

I can't understand why two posts from Friday and Saturday on CT Blue (www.ctblueblog.com) with Courtney in the headline don't show up. Joe Courtney is the Democratic candidate for Congress in CT's 2nd District--shouldn't that key word be good? Or is it some other problem? THANKS for providing this great service!

Posted by Mary on April 16, 2006 04:20 AM

Hey Kari--For some reason *all* my stuff's going into the combined posts section of Massachusetts, even when I include keywords that should establish posts as local. This seems to happen periodically. Sorry to bug you with this--I'm only doing it because my readership is like 5x greater when things go local. Thanks much, as always--Adam

Thanks a lot for adding the House Majority Project to the Colorado blogs list! You're providing a great resource to everyone who's out here trying to make a difference.

Note to folks who'd like better local content filtering--you can add key words to the filter and improve it for your state.

My posts about Bob Casey have not been appearing on the local/PA lists, they do appear on the "all posts" list, however. My other local, PA_centric stuff does make it to the local list. I submitted Bob Casey as a keyword the otehr day, perhaps that's the problem, dunno.

My question. Every post on Somervell County Salon is local-I don't put national politics on there. I will see the posts, after several hours, show up on Local but then after a bit, they're gone but they're on combined. Except that quite often they then only show the titles (when on local, they showed both titles and some text). For example, I have been doing quite a bit of video and audio about the Trans Texas Corridor, and going to local county meetings to record comments. But they don't stay on the local front page nor the home page. I'm biased, of course, but I believe it's of importance for everyone in the country to read up on the TTC as part of the NaFTA superhighway. Is there some special keyword I should be putting in to have these be seen as local?

Posted by salon on July 16, 2006 10:43 PM

I am wondering why on 9/25 my blog had 2 new posts. One appeared on LeftyBlogs Florida and one didn't. The one that appeared "New Democraatic Office Opens in Delray Beach" was short and the one that didn't appear "Political Talk Can Ruin A Party" was long and they are WordPress. The tages should clearly identify both as local posts. Is there a problem with the one that did not appear?

Posted by BocaDem on September 25, 2006 01:13 PM

BocaDem-- It worked just fine. Your second post didn't appear in the local-only section because there's nothing local in the first 300 characters. I'll repeat them here for you:

Political Talk Can Ruin A Party Only this time it might be the Democratic Party The other night I was a guest at a small dinner party. The guests were mostly Democrats. There was one Independent and I, of course, was identified as the “liberal” in the group. The talk, as you might expect was about the

Hey, there --

Washblog (www.washblog.com) is not showing up at all (zippo) for several days on your Washington page. Not a single post -- and we've got lots of them. Usually, there are many Washblog posts here. And it's not our RSS feed, as the posts are showing up on Pacific Northwest Portal (http://www.nwprogressive.org/portal/) and PNW Topics Hotlist (http://www.topichotlist.com/th/topichotlist.shtml), which both pull from our RSS feed. It's not because they're not Washington-based posts. Nearly all of our front page posts are Washington based.

We moved our blogs and main content to http://atomic.blackwednesday.org. I then added the new blog. I believe this was about 2 weeks ago, but I am yet to see the new posts aggregate to LeftyBlogs. I'm sorry, but I didn't see this covered in the documentation.

Okay, I left a comment on the Bug Report page that our site isn't showing up although submitted months ago.

I've read all this "why your posts may not show up" several times, and I cannot find any reason why our site is still not showing up.

The feed is not Feedburner:
http://www.michiganmessenger.com/rss/rss2.xml

The content is local with the occasional national -- much content is about the same local items that other Michigan Leftyblogs post about.

And no response to my first comment left 3.5 weeks ago.

I'd still like to know why affiliate sites Iowa Independent, Minnesota Monitor, Colorado Confidential show up here and ours doesn't. I'm removing the button from the site until there's a reply or a change.
