Is there a "bad" blog in the mix?

Every once in a while, we get reports of right-wing blogs having snuck into Lefty Blogs. That's good - we definitely want to keep that from happening.

But sometimes, the reports are about a particular blog not conforming to another person's view of what "lefty" means. What did Will Rogers say? "I don't belong to an organized political party - I'm a Democrat!"

Around the country, there are lots of tough issues and campaigns where lefties are fighting with each other - and different thresholds for what makes a liberal. After all, the definition of 'lefty' is different in San Francisco than it is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In situations like this, I like to go back to first principles. The purpose of LeftyBlogs is to provide easy access to a wide range of voices on the left. They're not expected to agree with each other all the time, or even most of the time. If you don't like a particular blog, don't read it. Better yet, read it and comment on their blog - or post on your own. Bad free speech is best combatted by more good free speech.

So - if you find a right-wing blog in your midst, let me know. But if the question is whether someone is liberal, progressive, or lefty enough for your taste - don't be surprised if I leave 'em in.

You may want to look at MoCoProgressive - http://mocoprogressive.blogspot.com. The blog was mysteriously deleted on Tuesday, and has been recreated by a different person. So far, I've seen only attacks on Democratic politicians, which is not necessarily non-progressive, I know, but a bit troubling for a two-day old blog. Also, check out the links.

Before some sort of war begins over whether the new MoCoProgressive is progressive "enough," let me get out that this is NOT what I am saying, I'll leave that to the site admins here. I am just flagging that it is a new blog, so that its status can be considered.

I agree with blue. I come back from vacation and find that MoCoProgressive (which doesn't deserve the name compared to the previous blogger who had it) has now denounced the county teacher's union, called for a conservative, anti-tax candidate to have a bigger role in the County Executive election, and complained about the alternative minimum tax. There is nothing lefty about that blog, and I don't want it showing up on my blogwire.

The new MocoProgressive blogger has a different style from the previous blogger, but he obviously meets the criteria for being progressive. Just because he has broadened his blog to cover more viewpoints doesn't make him any less progressive.

His discussion about the AMT has merit for leftys. MoCoProgressive is just pointing out that the AMT is hitting the middle class now, not just wealthy people, and it's going to hit even the lower earners if something isn't done.

My Left Nutmeg is an Illinois blog that shows up in CT listings.

The blog is fine, it's just in the wrong state's list.

CT is the 'Nutmeg' state so the keyword may be pointing it to the wrong place.

We in MA have an issue which I have already brought up previously with the Leftyblog folks. Though I understand completely what they're saying (who does dictate a liberal or lefty point of view - half the point is that no one should) I will reiterate that Cape Cod Living is not living up to the spirit of dialog, lefty or otherwise. They are not a good Leftyblogs denizen. (I'm not even sure they are Democrats OR liberal in any way.) They don't even really talk about politics, unless it's politics that affects the pet issue they obsess over.

I do not dislike the inclusion of one-issue blogs, or blogs that disagree with most of the rest of us, or even more conservative Democratic blogs, but this blog has consistantly attacked everyone and anyone who disagrees with them. They are part of a group of well-funded opposition to the Cape Wind energy project. They totally do a smear job on any politician who disagrees with them. A good example is this: Rep. Barney Frank had never been in their radar until he came out for Cape Wind. Then suddenly they are viciously attacking him. I've been attacked on my own blog. They've been BANNED from Blue Mass Group, from what I understand. Bloggers who moderate comments rarely let any comments by these two to be published on their blogs because of their repugnant nature.

If you read their blog, the two authors are almost only having a conversation with themselves. They outright lie! I swear to god. I know other people who are opposed to Cape Wind for legitimate reasons. I respect their opinions and like to talk about why with them (even though I vehemently disagree). However, these Cape Code Living bloggers are not interested in blogging; only smearing, lying, and self-enforcing their screwball ideas about what the rest of the state thinks about Cape Wind. Today they have all the praise in the world for Ted Kennedy (who has worked against Cape Wind for whatever reason). If tomorrow he decided to come out for it, that very second they would be all manner of shitcanning Kennedy.

I just don't think they're worth reading - for anyone - on account of the lies and smears they purport is just "another point of view." Bollocks. They aren't Leftyblogs material, in many people's opinion.

I just wanted to make the case again, because seriously, they degrade Leftyblogs by being on the blogroll. I wouldn't be saying this unless I really believed they are not even one iota good for the debate.

Lynn,

Aren’t you taking this crusade a little too far?

Ted Kennedy and John Bonifaz support my blogging and both link to Cape Cod Living. I’d call Ted and John progressives. I’m not sure what you’d call Teddy except a NIMBY.

No, I don’t support Patrick Devel. I support another Democrat – one whom I believe can win the state for the Democrats.

Is Cape Cod Living a leftyblog? Well, I guess that has to do with your point of view.

We support equal access to information, the free expression of ideas, economic, social and racial equality, and we are firmly committed to advancing environmental protections for avian and marine life.

Decide for yourself if any of this makes us lefties.

Posted by bugsy on June 29, 2006 01:25 PM

Lynne, we are definitely NOT right-wingers. We do disagree over an issue and those who support it but, hey, that is about as American and as Democratic as you can get.

I can tell you this, as much as you like to throw around unfounded accusations in an over the top way, I still support your right to your opinion even though you are incorrect in your statements.

WAs bugsy said we support equal access to information, the free expression of ideas, economic, social and racial equality and we are firmly committed to advancing environmental protections for avian and marine life.

I have worked as a wildlife advocate for over twenty-five years and have accomplished a lot including a ban on a deadly pesticide that not only affected avian health but human as well.

There is a rift in the environmental community... perhaps there always was but it is big now. But, we will work it out.

brewedfreshdaily.com is an NE Ohio aggregate that regularly posts diaries from local republican bloggers. This is fine for a local blog but seems inappropriate for "Lefty" blogs. It is irritating to get diaries that support republican issues and candidates in my blog feed.

Here is an article linking to a local R blogger who is attacking local D candidates:
http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2006/07/11/had-a-good-laugh-at-this/#respond

Here is a link to another R Blogger posting on BFD:
http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2006/07/08/tax-collections-rise-deficit-falls-the-ny-times-is-surprised/#comments

Here is one where they go after Al Gore:
http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2006/07/06/gore-redux-in-mexico-how-could-the-voters-not-choose-me/#respond

Most of the content is non-political, which isn't a big deal but add that to the Republican posts and it starts to be annoying.

See what you think.
Thank You.

Maybe we weren't wrong after all.

We were banned from LeftyBlogs because we spoke out against a wind project called Cape Wind. We questioned the environmental benefits of industrializing a marine sanctuary. Furthermore, we questioned Deval Patrick's support of this project. Patrick has connections with Chevron, owns a portfolio of oil stocks including Exxon/Mobil and Marathon Oil and Patrick has accepted campaign contributions from the wind developer.

Now, Cape wind's developer has announced plans to build a diesel powered peaking plant across the street from an elementary school in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Boston.

The fall-out has been far-reaching. The head of Cape Wind's advocacy group, Clean Power Now, has resigned. The lead media protagonist for Cape wind has publically questioned the deal and the other liberal candidate in the mix against Patrick, Chris Gabrielli, has come out in favor of land based wind turbine development. A position we support.

We're very sorry that we had to push the envelop to get this story out. We're very sorry we upset the liberal community in MA for pressing this issue. however, events have proven that instincts were correct.

We respectfully request reinstatement to leftyblogs.

I am a life-long anti-nuclear/peace activist. My writing and that of my contributors reflects this POV ( Although I was surprised to learn that my partner was previously a Reagan Democrat who has recently come back into the Democratic fold).

MA Blogs are dominated by a small group of folks aligned with BLUEMASSGROUP. This group does not use your blog wire and has developed a competitive product. We support LeftyBlogs and would like our voice to join yours on this wire.

Thanks for your consideration.

I stumbled across your blog while I was doing some online research. I admire the fact that you, while keeping your own ideology at the forefront, also acknowledge that free speech encourages (and even allows) more free speech.

Ohio Learn and Earn is not a progressive blog, nor does it deal with progressive issues. It's a campaign blog for an initiative to legalize slot machine gambling in Ohio at Ohio's horse race tracks, and a private site in Cleveland, and a portion of the proceeds are dedicated to scholarships to Ohio's children.

It's an initiative blog that isn't necessarily a progressive issue or has progressive support. Nor does it proport to be a progressive organization (or a conservative one for that matter.)

Why all of a sudden are we seeing all these Dayton Politics posts that do things like extol the GOP and Ken Blackwell. Doesn't seem left at all to me.

Posted by Muffet on September 8, 2006 10:22 AM

I'd just like to say I agree with Modern Esquire that Ohio Learn and Earn is not a blog that promotes anything progressive nor is this even a slightly left issue.

Posted by Lisa Renee on October 5, 2006 12:32 PM

It's been well over a month since Modern Esquire brought up the Ohio Learn and Earn blog and correctly pointed out that this blog is not even remotely Left or Progressive.

It's rather disheartening to see that a blog who's purpose is to try to mislead the public and down right lie is still listed on Lefty Blogs.

You definitely need to look at http://www.leftyblogs.com/cgi-bin/go.cgi?http://flnews.blogspot.com/2006/10/florida-power-of-attorney-florida.html.
It was at the top of your Florida Local list updated 9:12 PM 10/19/06
This is nothing more than an ad. It has no place here OR on "righty blogs."

I agree with comments above re "(New) MoCoProgressive" in Maryland's leftyblogs; he/she tends to indulge in +/- nativist quick hits about crime by Hispanic people lately.

Also, the current blogger admits he/she is not the original one: "The original MoCo Progressive mysteriously disappeared on May 29, 2006," MoCo said. "This version of MoCo Progressive is being edited by a Montgomery County resident who has no affiliation with the original MoCo Progressive editor." So depending on when the blog got on LeftyBlogs in the first place, you could just reevaluate its suitability for leftyblogs.

It looks like MoCoProgressive has been removed from the leftyblogs. I still think that it's one of the best blogs because it has lots of postings about things that aren't mentioned anywhere else. Some of the views are not totally lefty, but they aren't exactly righty, either, and there continue to be some very lefty blogs entries. Also, the discussion about immigration is as much a lefty issue as it is a righty issue. It's the republicans that want cheap labor from undocumented immigrants -- that's why George Bush keeps the border open.

Just my two cents.

Posted by Sandra Cranston on November 7, 2006 01:43 PM

In case anyone had any doubt about the wisdom of de-linking the "New MoCo Progressive", take a look at the latest post -- some dribble about Hispanic family values that is clearly a veiled racist post...

We were banned from Leftyblogs due to a disagreement over a proposed wind farm off Cape Cod. Supporters of Deval Patrcik ganged up on us for not toeingthe party line.

Here's something to keep in mind as Gov-elect Deval Patrick moves to the center on this issue:

LOWELL - Reiterating his campaign promise to add Massachusetts into a regional compact to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and support the Nantucket Sound wind farm project, Gov.-elect Deval Patrick told environmental activists Saturday gathered at UMass Lowell to listen "hard" to the project's opponents.

"I will tell you, those of us who do support it, Cape Wind, have got to learn to listen hard to the serious issues raised on the other side of that question, because not everybody, not everybody who opposes Cape Wind is a rich beachfront property owner concerned about their view," he said. "There are serious questions. But it seems to me we won't get anywhere on this or on the other . . . bold initiatives unless we're willing to listen hard, and listen carefully and listen respectfully to the other side."

If we stop talking Democracy dies.
