Got feature suggestions? Now is the time.

Hey everybody... LeftyBlogs has been growing by leaps and bounds. Every day, we're indexing some 2000 to 3000 blog posts - and we just cleared 11 million clickthrus. Truly amazing.

Over the last year, a lot of folks have shared suggestions for the next iteration of LeftyBlogs - and I want to tell you that those ideas are actually going to be implemented.

At Mandate Media, we've just added a kick-ass programmer to our team - and he's pulling some long hours re-engineering LeftyBlogs from the ground up.

The new LeftyBlogs will be faster, more stable, more transparent, and more customizable. Blog owners will be able to view the current "health" of their feed - and see how long ago they were indexed. And all LeftyBlogs readers will be able to search LeftyBlogs for specific keywords - and even make those searches "live" and auto-updating. Readers will also be able to "bookmark" particular posts and save them to a page of past favorites.

But we're not just interested in telling you what's going to be in the new LeftyBlogs.

You tell us. What do you want to see?

Dream big. We've got a powerful and robust river of blogginess flowing through here -- what should we do with it? What would make your life easier and more interesting - either as a blog reader or a blog publisher?

Why is my post with 69 hits not in the included in the top weekly posts?

Posted by Mimi Schaeffer on April 26, 2007 09:02 PM

Please don't post bug reports here. We're looking for feature suggestions here.

Bug reports should be posted on the Bug Reports page.

(But rest assured, improved stability is a major reason we're re-engineering LeftyBlogs from the ground up.)

Any chance you can implement some obscenity filters for the blogwire? (Maybe optional on/off if somepeople are anti-censorship?) I'm probably going to have to remove the PA blogwire from a Democratic site that I run, because two many four letter words are appearing in the Post titles listed there.

Posted by Eric Behrens on April 30, 2007 07:20 PM

A good suggestion, Eric.

We're going to really provide a lot of customization options for the blogwire. Among them...

* You'll be able to choose local-only or all-posts.

* You'll be able to remove specific blogs from your blogwire

* And I like your suggestion: We'll include an optional obscenity filter.

Any other ideas?

Oddly enough, the first thing that comes to my mind is cash. I'm suggesting a weblog advertising network ala BlogAds. With around 3000 member blogs across the country, you've got a tremendous range that might appeal to advertisers. I don't think anyone should expect to retire off such earnings, but $20 or 30 bucks a month would certainly help defray hosting expenses and might help fund individual blog initiatives (like venturing into videoblogging, say). And if LeftyBlogs absorbs a fee from earnings - 25 or 30%, maybe - that could make for a nice revenue stream for LB.

Apart from that: I'd like to see LB create a syndicated site, pulling not just headlines and links from member blogs, but actual content, even if it's just the material from the excerpt field in Movable Type (for example). You'd wind up with something very much like an online digest or magazine. You might want to only pull entries that had specific tags or categories like "politics," maybe.

Looking forward to the new customization features. That will really enhance the product.

Philip --

You are spot on. I've already created the empty shell of a LeftyBlogs ad network -- and gotten an informal "youbetcha" from both Markos at DailyKos and Chris Bowers at MyDD (who created the big-blogs Advertising Liberally network.)

We're also working on really souping up the view-pages on LeftyBlogs to do much of what you're talking about. Don't want to grab too much content, since that would punk the traffic from all the little blogs out there - but more than just headlines would be great.

I'd really like to see a national feed using the keyword IMPEACH!

Posted by Mark Manley on June 13, 2007 09:59 AM

WEll then, I moderate an Ohio based blog and am disappointed when the subject matter is not specifically Ohio but pertinent nationally and internationally.

I also notice others are getting by with their blogs not complying with the "state only" rule as ones I post get get passed up.

What up wit dat?

Can we have some equity here?

How about a lefty National post section, and the international by country, say, whatever country is mentioned like in "She talks like she sounds" blogger talking about Fresh Air and Iran.

We blew the election in Ohio and us idealists are still trying to get the theft of the 2004 election results out in the open and at the same time permanently plug the hole in that dike so I am trying to remedy that via blog... relevance is the long term perspective ... especially when it's late and you had a long day... Support peace and hand counted paper Ballots now please.

I'd like a button for my state, and I bet others would, too.

Posted by John A Arkansawyer on June 25, 2007 02:48 PM

Considering that that "leftism" is considered progressive, shouldn't the motto be "taking forward America in all fifty states" or "Taking America forward in all fifty states" - and America is a proper noun so it is supposed to be capitalized.

I'd like to see a republished feed of the blogwire, not just the Javascript.

Also, an RPC ping interface like weblogs.com

Well before you dream too big, perhaps you can tell me why my posts are no longer being linked.

"Scottie Comes to Papa - Flip Flops on Fees" and "Lies, Lies and More LIes" failed to link.

'The Stick' on www.johpadgett.com/monticello writes good satire postings at least weekly. Check him out; he could merit a weekly feature. His last 3 or 4 weeks has been very good.

We're an LGBTQ group blog who's owner is based in Indiana. We cover some Indiana stories, of course, but also a LOT of national issues. We have over 35 contributors from around the nation covering stories from their neck of the woods too.

Yet, we're stuck in the Indiana group. That means our stories are only listed for Indiana and on the Indiana blogwire. Some of our biggest stories have been missed by LeftyBlogs just because they were more national in scope. How about an area for national blogs instead of just states only?

Posted by Bil Browning on September 2, 2007 09:03 AM

There needs to be a way to cross feed diaries on national issues off of the local Blog feeds. Even if it is an occasional hit or miss way. Perhaps one spot on every bodies local feed that was dedicated to random posts on national issues from all of the local Blogs across the nation, or even just from random Blogs in a region.

Posts could be easily identified with the simple tag of "National".

I have my feed set to show 20 links. I would love to be able to have a few national news diaries integrated into that one feed. Just a suggestion to add a little more variety in the feeds.

I'd love to see some sort of markup tags (as HTML comments) that a writer could use to suggest to the LeftyBlogs feed how to handle the post.

For instance, within an HTML comment, use these commands:

LB:NoFeed = Do not show on the feeds
LB:LocalFeed = Intended as a local post
LB:National = Intended as a national post
LB:Keywords:foo, bar, blah = Index this post with the following keywords. (Provide a search widget that would handle this for us...)

Hope this makes some sense - it would be very helpful.

OK, so this is a very old post, but I'm hoping people are still reading the comments.

I haven't seen it reported in the bug reports, but there is an "issue" with WordPress blogs that use Widgets for their sidebars. The WP folks are trying to crack down on needless security holes, especially on their multi-blog version WordPress MU, and they've eliminated the ability to insert JavaScript into text widgets. That basically means there really isn't any particularly easy way to insert the LeftyBlogs blogroll.

I've solved the problem with a Widget I created that creates its own custom JavaScript. It won't work on any blog that isn't already registered to LeftyBlogs, but it will allow you to arbitrarily configure the number of posts, a custom title and other options such as the state and time zone.

You can check it out here.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS OF PENNSYLVANIA

Are you tired of your various insurance rates always going up? Are you fed up with our PA Insurance Department always granting rate hikes to almost every insurance carrier who applies. Are you fed up with getting notice of rate hikes after they have already been approved? There is something you can do about it.

First of all, there are two bills pending in the PA Legislature: Senate Bill #560 and House Bill #1121.
Both of these bills have been sitting for months in the Banking & Insurance Committee of the PA Senate and the Insurance Committee of the PA House of Representatives. These bills would create a Consumer Advocate for Insurance, much like the PUC has. An office, outside the Insurance Department, affiliated with the PA Attorney General’s office to protect the rights of Pennsylvania residents in regards to insurance issues, such as rate hikes etc. This office would have the power to contain the insurance industry’s increasing our premiums without worrying about that industry’s lobbyists.

Everyone needs to contact the following elected officials in addition to your own elected PA Senators and Representatives, and demand that these bills be approved. Do it now, your wallet depends on it:

House of Representatives Insurance Committee:
Majority Chairman: Anthony Deluca @ 412-793-2448 or 717-783-1011 or tdeluca@pahouse.net. Minority Chairman: Nicholas Micozzie @ 610-259-2820 or 717-783-8808 or nmicozzi@pahousegop.com.

Senate Banking & Insurance Committee: Majority Chairman: Donald White @724-357-0151 or 717-787-8724 or dwhite@pasen.gov. Minority Chairman: Michael Stack III @ 215-281-2539 or 717-787-9608 or stack@pasen.com

Furthermore: Every Saturday, in a weekly newsletter called the PA Bulletin, the PA Insurance Department publishes any and all rate hike applications filed. We as Pennsylvania residents can use our computers, go to the internet site of www.pabulletin.com, scroll down to the Insurance Department and find out which of our health care providers, long term care insurance etc. etc. has just filed for a rate hike. On the notice, you can see that interested parties have 30 days from that date to make public comment/protest and the name & address to send it to. This is the easiest way to take control of your insurance rates. Every week, take 2 minutes and check this web site out.

We got us a spammer on the NY roll:

They're giving away serial numbers for proprietary software? Wha?
